The Tottenham Hotspur player revealed that even the lure of a £50-million move to Spanish giants Real Madrid was not enough to keep him in the game.
He said: “I’ve decided to stop playing simply because I’m bored of earning so much money. I like the idea of waiting tables for minimum wage or even just going on the dole.”
After a remarkable season, which saw the Welshman crowed PFA player of the year, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy immediately offered to triple Bale’s wages.
That deal would have earned the midfielder over £200,000-a-week. However, Bale has sensationally rejected that offer and asked if he could become a ball boy instead.
Unfortunately, a baffled Levy confirmed that only children were allowed to be ball boys and begged Bale to re-consider. But, it seems that player’s mind was already made up.
Tottenham have released this statement: “The club, the fans and the coaching staff are shocked by Gareth Bale’s decision to retire from football at the age of 23.
“Hopefully, Gareth can re-consider, as he is a valued asset to this club, and is a role model to young fans all over the world.”
After failing to qualify for the Champions League on Sunday, Spurs had braced themselves for a barrage of offers from Europe’s elite clubs.
However, after placing a price tag of around £50-milllion on the player, it seems the North London club will lose Bale for absolutely nothing this summer, in a quite unprecedented turn of events.
Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas confirmed that Bale has asked him for a job reference.
He said: “Gareth has sent his CV into a local tapas restaurant. They have a vacancy for a kitchen porter, so he is now waiting to be called back for an interview.
“Of course, I have tried to convince him otherwise, but his mind is made up. Never in my life have I witnessed such stupidity.”
