Mick Harford has sensationally declined the chance to be Joe Kinnear’s footstool at Newcastle.
The former Luton Town and Chelsea striker had previously operated under Kinnear’s heels at Luton and Nottingham Forest, and had played underneath him at Wimbledon.
In a statement, Harford stated: “I have taken the decision to decline Joe Kinnear’s offer to be his footstool at St James’ Park.
“Though Newcastle are a big club, and though Joe needs as many people to bully and boss around as humanly possible, the time is simply not right for me to make the move.”
Harford has instead opted to remain on the coaching staff at Milwall, though this latest setback for Newcastle means that manager Alan Pardew currently bears the brunt of Kinnear’s impenetrable ego, and intolerant persona.
A club source confirmed: “Joe really treats all the coaching staff – Alan especially – like they’re his bitch, basically.
“We need some kind of buffer in the role of lickspittle and general goon to take some of the heat off the rest of the management team.”
