The England centre forward recently handed in a transfer request to Manchester United, which seems to have alerted the space agency.
A Nasa spokesperson stated that the offer continued the organisation’s long history of sending primates into space.
“We have been admirers of Wayne for many years now. He is easily the most impressive specimen of his type. The fact that he can speak rudimentary English has obviously astounded us.”
Unfortunately, because Rooney isn’t actually an astronaut, or for that matter a monkey, he begrudgingly turned down the offer.
A spokesperson for the player said: “There is obviously a lot of interest in Wayne. However, even we were surprised by the call from Nasa. We thought it was a wind-up to be honest.
“But, when it became clear they had mistaken Rooney for some sort of ape humanoid, we assured them that even though he just looks, sounds and acts that way, he is in fact human.”
However, Nasa don’t seem to have been put off by the rejection. In fact, they intend to make an official bid for Wayne when the transfer window opens tomorrow.
They said: “Space travel is just about the most dangerous activity a person can do. Wayne Rooney possesses the right amount of brain dead fortitude that we look for in a candidate.
“Hopefully the prospect of being experimented on for many months before being shot into space will not have deterred him from exploring this fantastic opportunity.”
