The defender insists that being plagued by injury is a full time commitment.
He said: “Not being available to play is something that I am passionate about.
“Many great players are remembered for not fulfilling their potential because of injury. They are definitely role models for me.
“If I had continued playing for England, there would be even more pressure to get fit and do the job I am paid enormous sums of money to do.
“That is not the path that I have chosen.”
Ferdinand’s former team mate and limping mess Michael Owen has backed the stopper’s claims.
He said: “I have a lot of admiration for Rio.
“Many people don’t realise the unnessacry risks that injury prone players take.
“Bring injured is like a drug. And it’s the best damn thing that ever happened to me.
“I love letting people down and so does Rio.”
